Today, I’m excited to talk about a wonderful natural remedy that can help manage your pet’s allergies: Quercetin.

What is Quercetin?

Quercetin is a flavonoid naturally found in many fruits and vegetables like kale, blueberries, and broccoli. Often celebrated for its anti-inflammatory and antihistamine properties, Quercetin is dubbed as “nature’s Benadryl.” It works by reducing inflammation and the amount of histamine that causes itching and discomfort in your pets.

Is Quercetin Safe for Dogs & Cats?

Absolutely! Quercetin is a very safe option for your pets. However, if your dog is currently on medications, particularly those processed by the liver’s P450 pathway such as certain antidepressants or heart medications, it’s crucial to consult with a veterinarian. This ensures that the Quercetin doesn’t interact negatively with these medications.

What are some of the Benefits of Quercetin for Dogs & Cats?

By suppressing inflammation and histamine, Quercetin can make your pet less reactive to allergens like pollen. Not only is it helping with excess histamine which is part of the reason your pet is itchy and inflamed, it also helps support the gut lining.  Many pets who are experiencing allergies have what we call leaky gut. The gut lining should be nice and tight and when there’s inflammation, it can allow food, bacteria and toxins to pass through creating an inflammatory response that shows up as itchiness and ear infections.

While the response time might be slower compared to synthetic drugs, Quercetin is safe and natural, and combining it with bromelain—an enzyme from pineapples—enhances its anti-inflammatory effects.

How do you give Quercetin?

Quercetin can be found in various forms, often combined with other beneficial nutraceuticals. For some of our favorite brands, make sure to check the description.

For maximum effectiveness against inflammation, give Quercetin on an empty stomach, or with just a little food to help with digestion if your dog is hesitant to take pills.

A general guideline is 5-10 mg per pound of body weight, administered twice daily. Always verify the dosage with your holistic veterinarian, especially if your pet is receiving other medications. And make sure to comment HELP in the comments section so we can share with you our free resources we have to help you with your itchy pets.

What are the Potential Side Effects?

While rare, some pets might experience mild nausea or loss of appetite. If you notice any adverse reactions, consult your veterinarian immediately to adjust the treatment.
